Athletic Republic New Braunfels is the only state of the art performance sports and personal training facility in the corridor between San Antonio and Austin.  The franchise was brought to the area by local physicians and other health care professionals, after they recognized the opportunity to improve local athletes with Athletic Republic’s science-based performance sports training programs.

Athletic Republic New Braunfels held their official Grand Opening on June 13. The 4400 square feet facility includes the full compliment of Athletic Republic equipment,  plyometric wood floor, several Freemotion functional trainers, cardio equipment, strength equipment, a two lane 30 yd track, turf area for agility drills and a fully enclosed retractable net for throwing, hitting, kicking, batting and golf.

Athletic Republic New Braunfels facility and certified training staff supports an athletes’ development. The Centex Volleyball Club along with local high school football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and track teams are currently training and benefiting from Athletic Republic’s sport-specific training programs. The training center also offers the New Leaf Metabolic Testing System to endurance and committed fitness athletes interested in improving their training efficiently.  The athlete assessment system observes resting and active metabolic rates, so the athlete may fine tune their work-outs and nutritional requirements. Athletic Republic New Braunfels will soon be offering the metabolic testing technology to a local bariatric program to aid in weight loss program design and management.

Drs. David Starch, Alex Urteaga, Maria Lomba, and Jay Gruhlkey are co-owners and share the duties of operating the facility.  With specialties in orthopedic surgery, podiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation and family medicine, they bring extensive experience in sports medicine and exercise science to offer support to the athletes and trainers.  Dr. Starch is the director of Foundation Sports Medicine and, along with Dr. Urteaga, and other orthopedic surgeons and health professionals; they offer a free sports medicine clinic for injured local athletes during the fall and have the experience to provide extensive post rehabilitation programs.

Shawn M. Dassie, MS, CSCS, NASM-PES, USAW, Nike SPARQ – Director of Training
Shawn is an industry-leading performance sport professional having trained more than a dozen 1st round NFL, NBA and MLB draft picks. He is a former strength and conditioning coach at Iowa State and Drake University and has trained more than 100 top professional athletes.  Shawn has also served as the sports training director for a world-class health club and specialized physical therapy practice, working directly with a vast array of athletes from beginners to Olympic competitors. In addition, he was worked as a strength and conditioning coordinator for numerous national, professionally affiliated and independent sports teams. An award-winning trainer and leader, Shawn holds numerous credentials and is a popular speaker and writer for the industry. 

Matt Polhemus, MS – Trainer
Matt is a baseball four year letterman from St. Edwards University in Austin, TX where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology.  He then earned his Master’s degree in physical therapy from Texas State University.  Matt is currently the director of physical therapy at New Braunfels Sports and Spine Physical Therapy which is located adjacent to Athletic Republic.
  
Shandra Esparza – Trainer
Shandra is in charge of the metabolic testing program.  She received her Bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Texas State University and a Master’s Degree in education also from Texas State.  Shandra is the clinical coordinator for the athletic training program at Incarnate Word University where she is also an instructor.  In addition Shandra is an outreach program manager for Foundation Sports Medicine in New Braunfels.
