For the past 11 years, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has annually surveyed thousands of fitness professionals from around the world to determine the health and fitness trends. The survey is intended to identify current and emerging trends in the commercial, clinical, community and corporate segments of the industry. It also recognizes which trends are falling out of favor and may have been more of a fad than a sustainable form of fitness.
The top three Worldwide Fitness Trends for 2017, according to the ACSM survey are: Wearable Technology; which includes activity tracers, smart watches, heart rate monitors and GPS tracking devices; Body Weight Training, which uses the athletes body weight as a form of resistance training; and High-Intensity Interval Training, which alternates intense bursts of exercise followed by short recovery intervals.
